Hi Alleen:
OK, the new site is finally up now. The reason you got that error is because you were viewing the site when I was working on it and had actually made some of the new stuff live temporarily to check things out. Everything's good now, you shouldn't get any errors.

Hi Steven ~ Happy Holidays 2010! It's really great to see how far you have come with your website over the years. I come to visit a couple times each year (during the tour and around the end of the year) to read up on your music blog and see where you've been cycling. LOVE the photos. What camera are you using? You have a great talent for snapping some awesome images -- quite spectacular. Here's wishing you much peace and joy in the coming year. ~~ Alleen

PS: I'm no techy, so I thought you might like to know that I get an error message when I try to read (more) from your menus or blog this time around. (which was a total drag, because I was all primed - now I'll have to go back to reading Jane Austen)

Ha! Speaking of which, I know you are familiar with the Lyle Lovett version of "Ballad Of The Snow Leopard," but did I ever send you the Shake Russell / Dana Cooper version? You should hear that as well.

Hi Pascal:
I knew what you meant about the Cowboy double album. I have that vinyl album as well. And you're right, it's a reissue of their first two albums, as you note in your second post. The Clapton version of "Please Be With Me" is on his very famous album "461 Ocean Boulevard." Hopefully, Scott Boyer (the writer and other principle in Cowboy, besides Tommy Talton) made some good money off that publishing. I haven't heard of the Decoys, but I'll certainly check them out. As for Heartsfield, I'm only slightly familiar with them and don't have any of their albums. The cover to their album "Foolish Pleasures" looks very familiar though, I think I must have had it at one time, but I don't seem to any more.

Hi Steve,
I was a little confused when I wrote my comment. "Why Quit When You're Losing" is the title of the 1973 reissue of the original albums "Reach For The Sky" (1970) and "5'll Getcha Ten" (1971). And the songs was, of course, "Please Be With Me".
Since then, I discovered by accident on the web a fantastic album from Muscle Shoals: "Shot From The Saddle" by the Decoys, a "supergroup" led by Scott Boyer and featuring David Hood, NC Thurman, Kevin Holly and others. Songs written by Walt Aldridge (4), Gregg Allman, Butch McDade, Scott Boyer, Tim Henson, Eddie Hinto... A white southern rhythm 'n' blues album, a pure joy to listen to...

Bonjour Steve,

Happy to seee you back to music. I hope the cycling trip was good for you.
I never heard of "Happy to be alive" but it reminds me of the group Cowboy. I have 2 albums reissued in 1 double LP ("Cowboy" & "Why Quit When You're Losing"). The group was good though not really original at the the time. But the wrote (Scott Boyer) a song made famous by Eric Clapton: "Please Be My Friend". Cowboy's version was at least as good as Clapton's.
Did you know a group I was fond of in the seventies: Heartsfield. The came from Chicago and made four albums before disbanding (though I think the group reappeared later).

Pascal: Yes, you are, of course, absolutely correct. I realized when I was proofreading that post that I should make a point of that (as I did with the Elton John album), but I forgot. I like to think of these instances as "faux" first albums. Elton John, Warren Zevon, Emmylou Harris, etc. Artists who made a debut album that has been almost completely forgotten, lost or even disowned. By the way, none of the material on the Hank Williams "The Unreleased Recordings" is on "The Complete Hank Williams" box set, which I also have. If you're a big fan, the new 3CD set is worth it.

These are all great albums and I love the all, though I don't know "The Unreleased Recordings" by Hank (I have the 10-CD box "The Complete Hank Williams").
I just disagree with one thing: "Warren Zevon" is Warren's second album. The first is "Zevon - Wanted Dead Or Alive".

Hi Steve,

In a similar way to you, Charlie Hunter was also a very big help in my musical education, turning me to Richard Shindell, Dar Willams and Fred Eaglesmith in 1998 or so. At the time, as you know, I was on Elliott and Bruce and you and Charlie opened my mind to other great talents who now are my daily cure.

I had the immense pleasure to meet Charlie in his Bellows Falls studio, had a drink with him and Bill Morrissey at Oonah's, on our way to the Greenriver Festival in 2005 where I met Jim Olsen, Jeffrey Foucault, Kris Delmhorst, Peter Mulvey, Tracy Grammer, Anais Mitchell and could briefly talk backstage to Steve Earle and your freind Buddy Miller. How could I be closer to Paradise?

My only regret is that I did not buy a painting from Charlie...

Steve, Charlie, I owe you guys Big Time!

Pascal:
Wow, you're right. I had no idea this was out of print. I've had it a long, long time, since it was originally released in 1994. It's too bad that it's so hard to find now. I just looked on Amazon and there are no copies at all available even used. What a shame. I hope someone puts it back in print sometime soon.

Hello Steve, good to see you back! A trip to France?
I could have written the greatest part of your post, starting from Linda's "Heart like a wheel" which was the the first solo album I bought by a female singer. I wrote a post about it on my blog last year.
Concerning the McGarrigles, of course, the connexion with Loudon Wainwright III (and later with Martha & Rufus) was important too. Strangely, I only have two albums by the sisters: "Love Over And Over" and "The McGarrigle Hour".
But their importance must not be underestimated...
All the best,
Pascal
PS: Great albums from the DejaDisc label. Thank you for everything...

Herve:

I've long been a fan of Larry Hosford based soley on the "Crosswords" album. It's just great. I never got around to picking up a copy of the "AKA Lorenzo" album on vinyl when it was around. Larry is selling both CDs on his site, but they are, as you note, "home made reissues," and I try to avoid those when I can. I'd rather rip the vinyl myself and save the money!

Hi Steve,

I must be one of the rare persons who has Larry "Lorenzo" Hosford's CDs on the side of the pond!

Can't believe this guy could hire the services of Leon Russell and George Harrison!

Looks like my copies of Crosswords and "aka Lorenzo" are home-made reissues.

Met him though Jack WIlliams' yahoo! list and I must have played some songs of his on my defunct Americana in Paris show. Seems like it was a looong time ago.

Hey, Hervé! Everything's fine, just got super busy for awhile there. I'm hoping to get back into the swing of things, though one a day is probably out of the question for awhile at least. Hopefully I can get two or three a week in for the time being.
